In 2018, I was working for a real estate company managing high-end apartments. An expatriate tenant had furnished an entire unit and lived there for two years. When it was time to leave, they had no idea what to do with the furniture, so they left everything behind.

Problem solving

We were stuck. For weeks, neither I nor the company knew where to take it.

Then one Sunday, my phone rang. It was someone in London, attending a high-end conference at a nearby 5-star hotel. The hotel’s prices were out of reach, and they needed somewhere close by.

I looked at the furnished apartment and saw the answer. I cleaned it myself and handed over the keys for their three-week conference.

Customer as our hero

That guest didn’t need luxury pricing. They needed a place that was ready, honest and close. They got exactly that, and they had zero stress.

Empathy

I understood their situation because I had seen the same problem from the other side. Travelers were booking online and arriving to apartments that looked nothing like the photos, with no professionalism and no hospitality. Anyone who needed a longer stay had almost nowhere to turn.

New lifestyles

That single booking earned double the rent we normally collected on that unit. It also brought in about a hundred enquiries. Within a couple of months, Royale Furnished Homes was born.

In 2020, in the middle of COVID, I went into self practice and founded Royale Furnished Homes Kenya Limited. Today, we manage a large portfolio for property owners, along with units of our own, for people whose lives take them to new places.
